Although the company has firm roots in Ireland, strong family ties spanning five generations connect the Connolly family with the United States. In 1846, at the age of 16, Michael Connolly left the family tenant farm in Ireland and emigrated to the United States. Here, he trained trotting horses in Long Island, New York.
Encouraged by his family to return home to run the family farm and bakery, Michael reluctantly went back to Ireland in 1866.
In 1908 he bought a local grain mill, with its history dating back to 1758, to ensure he had a guaranteed supply of quality wholesome flour available for his successful bakery business.
A few years later one of Michael’s son’s, William, took over the running of this mill. Since then, Connolly’s RED MILLS, still a family company, has evolved into a substantial, renowned, provender miller and seed merchant, and an industry leader specializing in dog and cat foods, and horse feeds. Today the family business runs under the guidance and leadership of brothers Joe and Bill Connolly.
